Mele continues romp through the stat sheet, but Wolverines come up short in the red zone.
HAMMOND—The Woloverines rolled up 293 yards and senior Mallory Mele continued to rack up yardage gaining 102 yards on 25 carries,
but Northlake came up short four times in the red zone and managed only one score as Saint Thomas claimed a 27-7 win.
The loss dropped the Wolverines to 1-2 in league play and 3-5 overall with Springfield on the menu this Friday on the road.
The first Falcon scoring drive was setup by a 25-yard kickoff return by Breland Dillion giving STA
field position at midfield. Saint Thomas needed just three plays to go the distance with Javeon Francis going in on
a power sweep on a 28-yard touchdown run. Scott Sledge kicked the PAT to make it 7-0 with 10:44 left to play in the first period.
Northlake turned the ball over one downs on its first series when the Falcon defense forced a incomplete
pass on a fourth-and-nine situation stopping a Wolverine drive at the STA 10 yard line. The Falcons marched 90 yards in seven plays on its next
possession capping the drive with a four yard touchdown run by Breland Dillion. Sledge was wide left on the PAT attempt leaving the
score 13-0 with 4:56 remaining in the quarter. Highlighting the drive for Saint Thomas was a 32-yard run by Daryl Moore and a pair
of pass completions by Moore of 15 and 10 yards.
Following a Northlake punt, the Falcons put together a five-play, 80-yard drive that was culminated by a 33-yard
touchdown run by Francis. Sledge added the point after splitting the uprights on the PAT attempt to make it 20-0 with
11:50 remaining to play in the first half.
The Falcon defense held Northlake a third time on downs as the Wolverines failed to convert on a fourth and
five situation and Saint Thomas took over possession at the Wolverine 45. But the Falcons could not capitolize on field position and
went three and out. Northlake threatened reaching the Falcon 40, but the Saint Thomas defense stiffened with a 10-yard quarterback sack
forcing a fourth-and-15 situation. Northlake threw incomplete and Saint Thomas took over on downs at the Wolverine 49.
Saint Thomas marched down to the Northlake 30 with Moore hooking up with Steven Wronkoski for a 15-yard gain,
but Northlake's defense held the Falcons on downs leaving the score 20-0 at the half.
The Falcon offense outgained Northlake 223 to 122 yards in total offense at the end of the first half.
The Wolverines mounted a 12-play drive to start the third quarter reaching the Saint Thomas 11 yard line, but the Falcon
defense held Northlake for the fourth time on downs when a pass fell incomplete in the end zone ending a scoring threat.
Saint Thomas answered with a eight-play, 89-yard drive that ended when Moore hooked up with tight end Garrett Richardson for
a 23-yard touchdown pass on a fourth and six situation. Sledge added the PAT to make it 27-0 with 1:54 remaining to play in the period.
The drive featured a 32-yard run by Francis and a 15-yard gain by Garrett Taylor for the Falcons.
Northlake marched 45 yards in eight plays down to the STA six yard line in the early
moments of the fourth quarter, but the Falcon defense stopped the Wolverines for the fifth time on downs when Northlake
failed to complete a pass on a fourth-and-goal situation. Following a Saint Thomas punt, the Wolverines went to a no-huddle
offense and mounted a 11-play, 59-yard drive that was capped by a five yard touchdown from signal-caller Josh O’Rear
to Will Sigl. The point after was successful as Northlake avoided the shutout trailing 27-7 with 3:55 left to play.

shutout. Joshua O'Rear
led the Wolverines in rushing with 56 yards on five touches and a touchdown. The sophomore QB also
completed four of seven passes for 24 yards. Seniors Mallery Mele and Devin Milazzo combined for 103
yards rushing with Mele collecting 49 on four carries and two touchdowns, and Milazzo 54 yards on five attempts.
“This was a great opportunity for us to work on all facets of the game, and we were
much more disciplined tonight compared to our scrimmage last week,” said head coach Tony Agresta. “Sojourner
is a young, growing program and we have been where they are at. They showed a lot speed tonight,
and I was pleased that we were able to contain them and not let them work the edges on us.”
The two teams played three quarters with the varsity squads competing in the first
and third and the junior varsity teams in the second period. In all, the Wolverines totaled up 180 yards
rushing and 43 yard passing. On defense Mele had two interceptions and sophomore Matt Miller added another.
The Wolverines will remain at home next Friday when they host Varnado in their season
opener. The Wildcats earned a playoff berth last season in 1A. “This is the first real transition year
for us having had two winning seasons in a row and a big group of seniors departing last year so
we will see beginning next week how we respond,” said Agresta.
Senior Jake Springer set up Northlake’s first score recovering a Jag fumble on their opening
possession. The Wolverines took over at their 45 and marched the distance in just four plays as Mele rambled 20 yards
for the touchdown and kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 with 11:45 showing.
The Wolverine defense forced another Jag turnover when Mele intercepted a Sojourner pass
and raced 33 yards to set Northlake up at the Jags 20. Five plays later Mele added his second score rushing to paydirt
from two yards out. The PAT was good giving Northlake a 14-0 lead.
Mele worked his magic again in the defensive backfield intercepting a second Jag
pass on their ensuing possession and returned it 39 yards to the Sojourner 39. O’Rear rushed for 38 yards on the
first two plays of the drive and did the honors scoring from one yard out with just 18 seconds left. The PAT was
missed, but the Wolverines led 20-0 after the first varsity period of competition.
Northlake added another score in the second varsity session reaching the end zone in
just six plays as Gabe Hundley scored from nine yards out.
Wolverines go camping in their own backyard.
COVINGTON—The defending District 8-2AChamps decided to go camping in their own backyard this year
as the Wolverines held their annual summer football training on the Northlake campus. Head coach Tony Aggresta
and his staff are taking advantage of their new stadium and field turf conducting morning and evening practices
while keeping the team on campus throughout the six-day camp.
“We felt like between the great field turf that we have available to us now, not
having to be concerned with getting washed out by the weather, and the lights that gives us the ability to
stay out of the heat we just could not do any better if we traveled somewhere else for camp,” said Agresta.
“We really have the best right here at home.”
The Wolverines went 5-0 in their march to a championship last season and finished with
an 8-2 mark overall, but an array of starters graduated off that squad including LSWA All-State selections
Shawn Burst, Tyler Clark and Derek Williams. Some new faces will be expected to step up this season
as the Wolverines prepare to defend their title.
“Anytime you do a first, and in our case winning our first district championship,
it is like climbing a mountain. Once you get there it’s great, but then it is harder to stay on top.
As hard as it is to get there, it is harder to stay there,” said Agresta. “We have a lot young kids that are
going to have to step into some key positions this year. These young men understand that some guys have come
before them and worked hard to build a program and lay a foundation and now it is their responsibility
to work hard and keep the legacy in place, and we are very confident in the ability of those young men.”
The Wolves will break camp on Wednesday.
